The Low Voltage
Directive (LVD)
2006/95/EC*, as
with other
Directives, is
transposed into
the national law
of the Member
States and the
territories of
other Members of
the EEA. It is
also law in a
number of
candidate
countries by
means of a
number of
pre-accession
trade
agreements. It
is this
transposition of
Directive
2006/95/EC into
national law
that is directly
enforceable.
The Directive
2006/95/EC of
the European
Parliament and
of the Council
of 12 December
2006 on the
harmonisation of
the laws of
Member States
relating to
electrical
equipment
designed for use
within certain
voltage limits
(codified
version) was
published in the
OJEU L 374 of
27.12.2006, p.
10-19. It
entered into
force on the
20th day
following that
of its
publication,
i.e. on 16
January 2007.
The old
Directive
73/23/EEC was
repealed on the
same date.
More than a century after their emergence, electrical appliances are still developing more and more to the benefit of society. A safe use of all electrical equipment is a condition to this sustained deployment.
For electrical equipment within its scope, the Directive covers all health and safety risks, thus ensuring that electrical equipment is safe in its intended use. Guidelines on application and Recommendations are available - including LVD Administrative Co-operation Working Group (LVD ADCO) documents and recommendations - as well as European Commission opinions within framework of the Directive.
